New Delhi, Aug 21 (IANS) The railways said traffic was restored early on Monday on the Meerut-Muzaffarnagar-Shaharanpur section in Uttar Pradesh where the Kalinga Utkal Express derailed on Saturday evening.

The traffic resumed shortly after 1 a.m., officials said.

Rail traffic was disrupted on the busy route after 14 coaches of the train derailed claiming 22 lives. At least 156 people were injured in the accident.

Three senior railway officials, including the General Manager of Northern Railway and the Railway Board Member (Engineering), have been sent on leave following the disaster. While four other officials were suspended, a Chief Track Engineer was transferred.
