Student collapses and dies in Rajouri, clashes in town

Jammu, Aug 21 (IANS) A student fainted inside the college campus in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri and later died allegedly due to non-availability of an ambulance, leading to clashes in town as his fellow students protested, police said.

Tanveer Ahmad, a student of post graduate college in Rajouri town had fainted inside the college campus and was declared dead when taken to the district hospital in the town.

Protesting students alleged Ahmed had died due to lack of timely medical attention because of the non-availability of an ambulance to shift the student in time.

The students vandalised hospital property and clashed with police as they took away the body of the student from the hospital premises without allowing the doctors to perform an autopsy to ascertain the actual cause of death.

District administration said the student had apparently died of cardiac arrest.

"A medical board of three doctors was constituted to perform the post-mortem of the body to ascertain the cause of sudden death.

"Before the post-mortem could be performed, protesting students and locals took away the body forcibly from the hospital," said a statement from the district administration.

Police said five policemen had sustained injuries during clashes with the protesting students.
