Mamata congratulates Sharad Yadav for 'save composite culture' event

Kolkata, Aug 18 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday congratulated rebel JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav for organising the "save composite culture" event in Delhi.

Banerjee also said she and her party Trinamool Congress were glad to be a part of it.

Eyeing a new political equation after JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar switched sides to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and continue as Bihar Chief Minister, Banerjee said they would unitedly fight for the cause of Yadav's event.

"Sharad Yadav MP Ji congratulations for the event u organised in Delhi. We were glad to be a part of it. Unitedly we will fight for the cause," she wrote on Twitter.

Rebel JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav on Thursday brought together opposition parties on a common platform for saving the composite culture of the country, claiming it was in "danger", even as participants asserted that there was a need to fight divisive forces that posed a threat to the Constitution.

The Nitish faction sacked Sharad Yadav as its Rajya Sabha leader last week for opposing the party's alliance with the BJP.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress leader Ahmed Patel, CPI-M Generally Secretary Sitaram Yechury, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and Trinamool Congress leader Sukhendu Shekhar Roy were among the leaders from 14 parties who attended the event convened by Yadav on Thursday.
