Canberra, Aug 17 (IANS) Australian far-right leader Pauline Hanson on Thursday wore a burqa to the Senate in behalf of her One Nation party's efforts to ban the garment in the country, the media reported.

In a statement, Hanson said "the need to ban full face coverings in public was an important issue facing modern Australia".

Attorney-General George Brandis condemned Hanson's stunt and "counselled and cautioned" her against causing offence to religious groups, reports the BBC.

Brandis received a standing applause from opposition parties.
