The incident occurred on Tuesday around 8 p.m. when Khanak Kumar, accompanied by her family members, was returning to her home in GTB Enclave in East Delhi.
An FIR has been registered at the GTB Enclave Police Station.
"As per her father Namit Kumar's statement, the whole family had gone to a nearby park. While returning home, they heard a loud noise of a cracker amidst the crowd," a senior police officer said.
It was only when they saw blood oozing out of Khanak's chest that they realised that she had been shot, the officer added.
"They immediately informed the police and admitted the victim to nearby GTB Hospital where she is still undergoing treatment. The victim is said to be out of danger," he said.
The father of the girl said the family does not know who could have shot her. "We do not have any personal animosity with anyone. The police told us the bullet used in the crime belonged to a licensed weapon," Namit Kumar told IANS.
The police are examining CCTV footage from nearby roads, shops and intersections. "We are also verifying the previous records of licensed gun holders of the area to ascertain the identity of the accused," the officer added.
