New Delhi, Aug 11 (IANS) Sales of domestic passenger cars increased by 8.52 per cent in July, as compared to the same period last year, data showed on Friday.
As per data furnished by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), 192,773 passenger cars were sold in July, 2017 as compared to 177,639 units sold in July, 2016.
The off-take of other sub-segments such as utility vehicles zoomed up by 35.52 per cent during the month to 86,874 units, while sales of vans rose by 7.64 per cent to 19,350 units.
Industry data revealed that the overall domestic passenger vehicle sales edged higher by 15.12 per cent in July to 298,997 units from 259,720 sold during the corresponding period in 2016.
Similarly, the data showed that overall commercial vehicles' sales increased by 13.78 per cent to 59,000 units in July. The segment is a key indicator of economic activity.
However, the three-wheelers segment's off-take receded. It declined by 11.07 per cent to 41,261 units during the month under review.
In contrast, the overall sales of two-wheelers, which include scooters, motorcycles and mopeds, increased by 13.73 per cent to 1,679,055 units.
The industry data showed that the Indian automobile sector reported a healthy rise of 13.30 per cent in July 2017 -- with total sales at 2,078,313 units across segments and categories.
Moreover, the overall exports across categories increased by 3.91 per cent to 316,957 units during last month.
