Srinagar, Aug 5 (IANS) Three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore town on Saturday, police said.
The terrorists were killed in Amargarh area in an operation jointly conducted by police, Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), police spokesman Manoj Pandita said here.
Javaid Ahmad Dar, a resident of Baramulla, and Abid Hamid Mir from Bandipora were among the militants killed in the gunfight, the police officer said here.
Spontaneous protests erupted in Bandipora immediately after news spread that Mir, who belonged to the district, was among those killed in the operation.
According to reports, three civilians sustained bullet injuries in clashes with the security forces in Bandipora.
The identity of the third militant is yet to be established, the officer said.
"Three AK-47 rifles and two magazines have been recovered from them."
A police constable has also been injured in the gunfight, he said.
He has been rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors described his condition as stable.
Meanwhile, authorities closed educational institutions in some parts of the valley.
Mobile phone service and Internet service were suspended in Baramulla district to maintain law and order.
