Bhubaneswar, Aug 4 (IANS) The women's wing of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Friday staged a demonstration in front of Raj Bhavan here opposing the Centre's decision to withdraw subsidy on cooking gas (LPG).
They also submitted a memorandum to Governor S.C. Jamir, addressed to President Ram Nath Kovind.
"This is a betrayal of the poor people in the state and the country as well. We have submitted a memorandum to the Governor hoping that the Centre will withdraw its decision. The agitation will be intensified in all districts and blocks if the decision is not rolled back," said Pramila Mallick, BJD's women's wing president.
She said the decision would cause difficulties to the common man as day-to-day expenses will steadily go up.
The party has called for an agitation in front of the office of all district collectors on August 8.
The Union government has ordered state-run oil companies to raise subsidised cooking gas prices by Rs 4 per cylinder every month to eliminate all subsidies by March next year, which also triggered a protest in parliament.
