Kerala BJP distances itself from medical college scam

Kerala BJP distances itself from medical college scamThiruvananthapuram, July 22 (IANS) The Kerala unit of the BJP on Saturday distanced itself from an alleged medical college scam involving state party leaders.

Addressing reporters here soon after a meeting of the party state committee, former state BJP president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said: "A crime done by a party is different from a crime involving an individual.

"In this case one of our party workers, R.S. Vinod, has let down the party. We have taken immediate action by ousting him from the party. We will fully cooperate with the police probe and let the law take its course."

Vinod, the Cooperative Cell Convenor of the BJP, has denied having done any wrong and has also welcomed the probe.

Pillai added that if anything new surfaces in the probe and if anything is found to link any other party member, then too the party will take very strong action.

The case pertains to a Rs 5.60 crore bribe allegedly paid by a privately managed medical college to Kerala-based BJP leaders for influencing the Medical Council of India (MCI). Another such allegation has also surfaced in northern Kerala.

The vigilance has already served notices to a few people who are alleged to have been directly involved in the scam, including the owner of a medical college in the capital district, to appear before the probe team.

Earlier during the BJP meeting, various party leaders went hammer and tongs against the state BJP leadership at the manner in which state party President Kummanem Rajasekheran appointed a two-member party committee to look into the allegation of bribe taking by some members, without informing the core committee.

Trouble arose for the state unit after the report of the committee that studied the allegation was leaked to the media, which had names of BJP workers and leaders.

Sources in the know of things said that state party General Secretary M.T. Ramesh, whose name is believed to be in the report, broke down and said he has done no wrong and claimed he was being victimised.

Pillai without naming Ramesh said it was most unfortunate that the name of a party leader was being talked about when he has done no wrong.
