Rs 8 lakh-crore to be spent on Sagarmala over 20 years: Minister

New Delhi, July 18 (IANS) The government has identified 415 projects having a total cost of around Rs 8 lakh-crore for port-led industrialisation and development under the Sagarmala programme, Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh Lal Mandaviya said on Tuesday.

These projects would be implemented in phases over a 20-year period between 2015 and 2035, he said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

The Sagarmala programme is aimed at achieving port-led development through modernisation of existing ports, development of new ones and enhancement of connectivity between ports.

"As per the approved implementation plan of the programme, these projects are to be taken up by the central line ministries, state governments/ maritime boards and SPVs (Special Purpose Vehicles), preferably through private sector and Public Private Participation (PPP) wherever feasible," Mandaviya said.

Out of the 415 projects that have been identified, 189 are aimed at port modernisation (estimated to cost around Rs 1.4 lakh-crore), 170 for connectivity enhancement (costing Rs 2.3 lakh-crore), 33 for port-linked industrialisation (costing Rs 4.2 lakh-crore) and 23 for coastal community development (Rs 4,000 crore).

"Out of the 415 projects under Sagarmala, 199 focus projects are to be taken up during 2016-19," the minister said.
