Chandigarh, July 11 (IANS) Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court verdict on the SYL Canal issue and appealed to his Punjab counterpart Amarinder Singh to take immediate steps to ensure construction of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal in his state so that the farmers of both states could benefit.
"I thank the Supreme Court for its orders on the SYL Canal issue. The apex court has done justice. I appeal to Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, for his co-operation in construction of the SYL Canal on Punjab territory for the benefit of farmers in both states," Khattar said in a statement here following the Supreme Court ruling asking both Punjab and Haryana to resolve the vexed SYL canal issue through negitiations within two months.
Khattar expressed the hope that the Punjab Chief Minister would take immediate steps to honour the orders of the Supreme Court.
Haryana is seeking more water from Punjab to cater to the water demand of southern Haryana. Both states have been locked in a bitter political and legal battle on the SYL canal construction issue for the past nearly three decades.
