Srinagar, July 5 (IANS) The Jammu and Kashmir assembly on Wednesday passed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) resolution amid bedlam.
The resolution, moved in the house on Tuesday by state Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu, was passed by a majority vote amid noise and protest by the opposition National Conference, Congress and independent MLAs who held that the passing of the resolution amounted to surrendering the financial autonomy of the state as guaranteed by the Indian Constitution's Article 370.
Immediately after passing of the resolution, the state government called for an emergency meeting of the cabinet to be chaired by Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti.
Informed sources told IANS that the cabinet would give concurrence to the Constitutional Amendment 101 which would later be promulgated as an ordinance by the Governor to bring J&K at par with the rest of the county regarding one tax regime.
