Jerusalem, July 2 (IANS) Israel has bombed a Syrian Army position after stray mortars from Syria hit the Israeli-held Golan Heights, officials said.
The Israel's Army said in a statement that strike on Saturday night was in response to two errant mortars which hit earlier an open area in the northern Golan Heights near the security fence, Xinhua news agency reported.
Israel defence forces spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said that the country maintains a policy of non-involvement in the Syrian civil war, but "will not tolerate any breach of Israel's sovereignty".
He said that "Israel holds the Syrian regime responsible for any breach of its borders and will act accordingly".
The incident was the sixth time that a spillover from war-torn Syria hit northern Israel, without causing damage or injuries.
Since the beginning of the Syrian conflict in 2011, numerous shells have landed in parts of the Golan Heights, which are occupied by Israel since 1967, some of them by accident although others have been considered intentional.
