S.Korea to begin naval drills with US, Canada

Seoul, June 19 (IANS) South Korea will conduct live-fire naval drills with vessels from the US and Canada this week in waters close to Jeju Island, a Defence Ministry official said on Monday.

The drills are set to begin on Friday and will continue for four days, the official told Efe news.

Five South Korean vessels will participate in the exercises, including the destroyer Yulgok Yii.

The American Arleigh-Burke class destroyer USS Dewey, maritime patrol planes P-3C Orion, and helicopters Lynx and MH-60R will also take part.

On the Canadian side, the Winnipeg and Ottawa frigates along with SH-3 helicopters will be participating.

The three nations plan to perform several air defence exercises, anti-submarine operations and ballistic missile detection, in addition to real fire maneuvers.

The drills come amid tensions on the Korean peninsula due to Pyongyang's repeated weapons tests.
