Vasco da Gama rise to sixth spot in Brazilian Serie A

Rio de Janeiro, June 18 (IANS) Vasco da Gama rose to sixth spot in the Brazilian football Serie A standings with a 1-0 victory over Avai.

Yago Pikachu on Saturday netted the winner for the four-time Brazilian top-flight champions with a 20th-minute strike, reports Xinhua news agency.

The result at the Sao Januario Stadium here left Vasco sixth in the 20-team standings while Avai were last.

Meanwhile, a first-half goal from defender Sidcley gave Atletico Paranaense a 1-0 victory away to Atletico Goianiense.

In Saturday's only other match, Ponte Preta held Santos to a 0-0 draw at the latter's Vila Belmiro stadium.
