Rain brings further respite to Delhi, cooler days ahead

New Delhi, June 8 (IANS) The national capital on Thursday again had a much-needed respite from heat, as it saw a sharp drop in mercury with the maximum temperature recorded at 34.5 degrees Celsius -- three notches below the season's average.

Besides the drop in temperature, many parts of Delhi also experienced rain.

 

"Rain recorded in Safdarjung was 4.6 mm and in Lodhi Road area it was 3.8 mm. There was also trace of rains in the Ridge area," an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The minimum temperature on Thursday was 28.8 degrees, a notch above the season's average.

The IMD expects a further fall in the mercury as well as more rain.

"Temperature is set to drop further till June 11. After which it would rise but only hover around 40 degrees Celsius," the official said.

According to the IMD, on Friday there will be a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of thunder and lightning.

On Wednesday, at 37.2 degrees, the maximum temperature was three notches below the season's average, while the minimum was 26 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average.

The hottest area in Delhi on Thursday was Palam, where the maximum temperature was 38.8 degrees, two notches below average, against the sizzling 46 and 44 degrees Celsius on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
