Kolkata, June 7 (IANS) The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations on Wednesday announced plans to make a digital subject selection tool available to schools to enable students make "informed decisions" about their future prospective careers.
"It will help students make informed decision on career paths based on their interests, skills, personality and preferences. The tool would also allow students to explore various occupations to understand what kind of work each involves and what the prospects are," CISCE Chief Executive & Secretary Gerry Arathoon told the media here.
However, he added that they had not decided at which stage the tool, which would be self-administered with self-interpreting results, should be introduced.
Arathoon said the Council's Research Development and Consultancy Division are engaged in reviewing the syllabi of physical education, computer application, economics at the ICSE level and biotechnology and computer science at the ISC level to ensure that students are equipped with requisite knowledge and skills.
"They are also engaged in the development of new syllabi for Mass Media and Communication at the ICSE as well as ISC level from academic year 2018-19 onwards. Performing arts for classes 1 to 8, Sanskrit for classes 5 to 8, physical education and yoga for classes 1 to 8... these new subjects are being included from classes 1 to 8 from the academic year 2018-19 onwards."
About the recently introduced DigiLocker facility, Arathoon informed that schools in India are being instructed to capture the Aadhaar number of the candidates with Indian nationality.
DigiLocker, extended to candidates of classes 10 and class 12, by the Council in partnership with India's Department of Electronics and Information Technology, provides dedicated personal electronic space in a government owned public cloud storage, where an individual can keep his/her documents, files, certificate.
The free storage space is linked to Aadhaar number of the user.
The official also said the Council will have a new office-cum-training centre at Hyderabad.
"We do have an office in Elgin road in Kolkata. It is just one floor. I have written to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requesting we be given a property of land in Rajarhat to establish an office for the east and northeast. I am very hopeful," Arathoon added.
Asked about the Centre's proposal to reviseAthe 'no-detention policy' till Class 8, Arathoon said: "Let the states decide... I am sure the states will agree with the Centre."
