Bahrain suspends Al Wasat newspaper until further notice

Manama, June 4 (IANS) Bahrain on Sunday ordered suspension of publication of Arabic daily Al Wasat until further notice for "recurrent violation of the law" relating to publication of news

The country's Information Affairs Ministry said in an order that the decision was taken following the newspapers "recurrent violation of the law and spreading what would stir division within the community and undermine the Kingdom of Bahrain's relations with other countries," Xinhua reported.

The ministry specifically mentioned a column published on Sunday that defamed one of the Arab countries.

In January this year, the opposition-linked newspaper's online version was suspended on charges of publishing materials that threaten national unity.

Al Wasat was briefly closed earlier in 2015 and in 2011.
