Another fake doctor nabbed by CID in Bengal

Another fake doctor nabbed by CID in BengalKolkata, June 4 (IANS) The probe into the sensational fake doctor cases in West Bengal has taken a fresh twist with the CID arresting a "gastroenterologist" who has been treating patients in a renowned corporate hospital for over two decades by submitting an allegedly bogus registration number and MBBS degree, an official said on Sunday.

"We arrested Ajay Tewary from his clinic in Kolkata's Khidirpore area on Saturday. His letterhead claims that he is a consultant gastroenterologist with the Kothari Medical Centre.

"However, we found that he had submitted a bogus registration number with the Medical Council of India and had no MBBS degree. He only possesses a B.Com Honours degree," said a CID source on Sunday.

The Kothari Medical Centre website lists Tewary at the top of its list of specialists in the gastro-medicine department as an "interventional endoscopist" possessing an MBBS degree.

The sources said during grilling, Tewary claimed he obtained a homoeopathy degree from Assam.

"But that does not entitle him to serve as an interventional endoscopist. Also the letterhead was false," said the source.

Tewary joined Kothari in 1996, and had a soaring private practice in multiple chambers in various points of the city.

On Friday, the CID had nabbed another allegedly fake doctor, Suvendu Bhattacharya, from neighbouring Howrah district.

Last week, the CID had rounded up another physician Naren Pandey, who passed himself off as an allergy and asthma specialist in one of the city's top private clinics, Bellevue Clinic. In his Facebook profile, Pandey claims he studied at Xinjiang Medical University, but according to CID officers, he was a unani doctor and had neither a specialisation in allergy and asthma nor an MBBS degree.

The fake doctor racket came to the fore on May 3 when the CID arrested two practitioners employed in government-run hospitals in north Bengal's Alipurduar and North Dinajpur districts.

On May 25, Rameshchandra Baidya was arrested for his alleged involvement in supplying fake certificates.
