Ivory Coast elected non-permanent member of UNSC

Ivory Coast elected non-permanent member of UNSCAbidjan, June 3 (IANS/MAP) Ivory Coast has been elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term.

The decision was favoured by 189 votes out of a total of 192 voters at the 72nd session of the General Assembly of the UN in New York on Friday.

The election was the result of a diplomatic mobilisation undertaken by the Ivorian authorities and led by President Alassane Ouattara, said an official.

Ouattara, at the 71st General Assembly last September, had expressed his willingness to see his country occupy the seat of non-permanent member of the Security Council for the period 2018-2019.

Ivory Coast had served as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the periods 1964-1965 and 1990-1991.

Ouattara expressed his pride and satisfaction and welcomed the support and extraordinary mobilisation of the African continent behind the candidacy of his country.
