Goa minister’s driver fined for rash overtaking

Panaji, June 2 (IANS) Goa Water Resources Minister Vinod Palyekar's driver was fined Rs 600 for rash and negligent driving after a social activist video-taped the vehicle overtaking a car over a bridge on Friday and complained to the traffic police.

The confirmation of the incident and payment of fine was confirmed on social media by Palyekar, who is currently on an official visit to Uttar Pradesh.

"An incident happened in Goa while I am out of the state. My official vehicle (was being) driven by my driver. While taking it from Verna showroom to my residence after servicing, it was found overtaking on Mandovi bridge," Palyekar said.

Overtaking is not allowed on bridges is Goa.

"As servants of public, it should be our priority to lead by example. On knowing this incident, I have spoken to officials in Directorate of Transport and instructed them to act according to law as such an incident should not happen in future. Fine of Rs 600 has been paid," the minister said, attaching a copy of the challan on Facebook.

Earlier, social activist Aires Rodrigues posted a video of the minister's official car, a Toyota Innova, overtaking a vehicle on the busy bridge over the Mandovi river, near Panaji.
