‘India can install tsunami warning system in South China Sea’

'India can install tsunami warning system in South China Sea'New Delhi, May 24 (IANS) The government has all the capability to set up a tsunami early warning system in the South China sea but there is a long process involved, officials said.

The South China sea often sees Chinese claims over it but these are rejected by other countries like the Philippines and Vietnam.

However, the sea and its coasts continue facing a greater risk of tsunami hazards, more than in the previous years, according to several agencies including the Earth Observatory of Singapore.

"We are not doing it now and it's just a theory for now. We are working on it and it would require a lot of work, including suggestions, and has long processes involved," M. Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), told IANS.

According to the officials of the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre, Hyderabad, for now the Tsunami Warning System (TSW) is active in the Indian Ocean region and it is beneficial for India, Indonesia and Australia.

India also heads the Regional Integrated Multi-hazard Early Warning System for Asia and Africa (RIMES), and according to the plan, which is not operational, if this platform is used for TWS in South China sea, then countries like Vietnam would also be benefitted.
