Guwahati, May 19 (IANS) A member of Ulfa's anti-talks faction was gunned down by a joint army and police team in Assam's Udalguri district after a brief gunfight, a defence official said on Friday.
A defence spokesperson said that the incident took place at Nalkhamara Sonaripara village in the district on late Thursday night.
"Based on specific intelligence, a joint team of army and police launched a joint operation on Thursday. As the the column reached the village, a suspected individual was challenged and asked to surrender but threw a grenade and opened fire at the security personnel.
"In retaliatory fire, the cadre was eliminated. The person was identified as Ramesh Bora, a hardcore cadre of the outfit who was wanted in Udalguri and Darrang districts for various atrocities and illegal activities," the spokesperson said, adding that the slain cadre had been trained in Myanmar during 2006.
A 9 mm pistol, six live rounds of ammunition and Rs 6 lakh cash was recovered from Bora's possession, the defence spokesman said.
