New Delhi, May 17 (IANS) Legal Assistance Establishments will serve the essential purpose of providing "access to justice", Supreme Court judge Justice Dipak Misra said on Wednesday.
The Legal Assistance Establishments are a strategic cornerstone of the legal service authorities as a part of their commitment to update the legal service seekers about their cases and address the grievances of legal services beneficiaries at a one-stop centre, Justice Misra said while inaugrating the first Legal Assistance Establishment in the Delhi State Legal Services Authority at Patiala House Courts Complex here.
In such establishments, the legal aid beneficiaries would be able to get quick information about their case status pending in any of the districts, legal aid and advice and various schemes of National Legal Service Authority (NALSA) and central and state governments and can also talk to their advocates through telephone or video conferencing.
"Legal Assistance Establishments are multiple services single-point establishment for providing facilities for legal aid seekers under one roof and at a single location," Misra said.
Misra said that Nyaya Sanyog opens a new chapter in the progressive history of National Legal Service Authority.
The first such Legal Assistance Establishment (Nyaya Sanyog) would be manned by legal services advocate on the panel of Delhi State Legal Service Authority along with paralegal volunteers who would have knowledge of data base -- a platform containing status of all legal-aided cases pending in various courts of Delhi -- as well as other information required by legal services seekers.
With a view to facilitating easier access to information with regard to the legal services, Justice Misra, who is also Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority, has conceived the idea of establishing Legal Assistance Establishments in all State Legal Services Authorities (NALSA).
The first such establishment set up at Delhi State Legal Services Authority under the aegis of NALSA at Patiala House Courts Complex was inaugurated by Justice Misra in the presence of Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Justice Gita Mittal and other judges of the High Court and district courts.
