Two SPOs injured in Doda

Jammu, May 8 (IANS) Two Special Police Officers (SPOs) were injured on Monday in a mysterious firing incident in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district. Police denied militants were involved.

Doda's Senior Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shabir told IANS that "the mysterious firing incident" took place at the Tanta police post.

"Preliminary investigation revealed it was not a militant attack. But the exact cause of the firing is not known."

The two injured SPOs were being treated for injuries and "things will become clear once we are able to record their statements", Shabir said.

The injured SPOs were reportedly first shifted to the Doda district hospital and then to Jammu city.

Police said Army and police reinforcements were rushed to the post which is located in a mountainous area.

SPOs were recruited by the police on a monthly remuneration to fight militancy in Jammu and Kashmir in the mid-1990s.
