New Delhi, May 6 (IANS) Political leaders across the spectrum condoled the demise of former judge Leila Seth on Saturday, remembering her contribution in the legal field.
"Saddened by the passing away of Justice Leila Seth. Her remarkable contribution to the legal field will be remembered. My condolences," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement.
Expressing his grief, Vice President Hamid Ansari said that Seth will be remembered for having "blazed a trail for women in the legal field" and cited her commitment for the protection of human rights.
"As the first woman judge on the Delhi High Court and the first woman to become Chief Justice of a state High Court, she blazed a trail for women in the legal field. She will be long remembered for her commitment to protecting human rights in India.
"I convey my sincere condolences to the bereaved members of the family and join the nation in praying for eternal peace for the departed soul," Ansari said in a statement.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conveyed her sadness through a tweet in which she lauded the "champion of human rights".
The Congressalso condoled the death of the acclaimed jurist.
Justice Seth passed away on Friday night around 10.30 p.m. after suffering a cardio respiratory attack. She was part of Justice Verma Committee, formed to created tough sexual harassment law after Nirbhaya incident in December 2012.
