Aizawl/Kolkata, April 30 (IANS) Hours before they scripted history by winning the I-League, Aizawl FC on Sunday had lodged a complaint with the All India Football Federation protesting against posting of all four match officials from West Bengal for their crucial game against Shillong Lajong Football Club.
With Bengal soccer side Mohun Bagan also in the title race, and scheduled to play their last match at home against Chennai FC around the same time (7 p.m.) on Sunday, Aizawl had a few days back written to the country's apex soccer body to ensure that match officials from Bengal and the northeast were not given charge for any of the two games.
"Around 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aizawl FC gave a letter to AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das protesting against the deployment of all four match officials from Bengal for their tie against Shillong Lajong," I-League CEO Sunando Dhar told IANS.
However, the club went ahead and played the match which ended 1-1, making Aizawl FC the first outfit from the northeast to win India's premier soccer league.
