Bhubaneswar, April 24 (IANS) The Odisha government has convened a two-day special assembly session from May 18 to discuss and pass State Goods and Service Tax (GST) Bill, following Parliament's clearance of the four central laws necessary to implement GST from this July.
Governor S.C. Jamir has approved the special session of Odisha Assembly to discuss GST Bill on May 18 and 19.
The special session will discuss state GST Bill and amendment to the Odisha Value Added Tax (VAT), said a notification.
The state assemblies need to pass the state GST law to switch over from the current system of levying multiple indirect taxes at the state and the central level.
Prior to the session, a workshop would be organised by a central team to give a basic understanding of the new tax regime that would be implemented across the country to the legislators, said sources.
On April 6, the Parliament passed four legislations to pave the way for roll out of the historic GST, including the Central GST Bill, 2017, Integrated GST Bill, 2017, GST (Compensation to States) Bill, 2017, and the Union Territory GST Bill, 2017.
Bihar Assembly on Monday adopted the GST bill along with the Bihar taxation (Amendment) Bill, becoming the second state after Telangana to pave the way for rollout of the new tax regime.
