Arunachal, Assam firm on fast-tracking Subansiri hydro project

New Delhi, April 24 (IANS) Both Assam and Arunachal on Monday assured the Centre that the 2,000-Megawatt Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project will be put back on the track to ensure no further delay.

The assurance was given by Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during a meeting with Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal here.

"This project has been stuck for long. It is perhaps time to kick-start this project as Arunachal Pradesh residents have huge expectations from it," Khandu told Goyal, who reviewed issues relating to power/hydroelecticity in Arunachal Pradesh during the meeting.

After Khandu pressed for fast-tracking the 132-KV transmission lines between Khuppi-Bomdila-Tawang and Bomdila-Kalaktang, the Union minister directed the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. authorities to start work in the coming months.

Goyal also issued necessary directions when Arunachal Pradesh brought up for discussion the issue of its youths' employment in hydroelectricity projects implemented by state-owned North East Electric Power Corporation (Neepco).

Khandu urged Goyal to direct Neepco to complete Kameng (600 MW) and Pare (110 MW) hydroelectric projects this year without further delays.
