New Delhi, April 21 (IANS) The Bar Council of India on Friday decided to call off all agitation programmes after Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad assured them that no action will be taken on the Law Commission recommendations, including a proposal to ban strikes by advocates.
"As I was hoping, Law Minister has clearly said that no action will be taken by the government on the recommendations of Law Commission. In view of this clear assurance of our government, the Bar Council of India has decided to recall all the agitation programs to protest the Bill and report of Law Commission," BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra said in a Facebook post.
Lawyers all over the country abstained from court work after lunch on Friday and also burn copies of the Law Commission recommendations and the Advocates Act (Amendment) Bill 2017, BCI said.
The Law Commission had suggested that lawyers should be slapped with penalties if they resort to a strike in the future.
The BCI has dubbed the amendments proposed by the Law Commission in the Advocates Act as "draconian, anti-lawyers, unconstitutional, undemocratic and anti-people".
