Love to hear Mamata’s stand on triple talaq: Smriti Irani

Kolkata, April 19 (IANS) Taking a dig at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has faced repeated attacks from the BJP for "minority appeasement", Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday said she would love to hear about her stand on triple talaq.

"It is interesting that I am addressing the press in the state headed by a female Chief Minister. She talks about justice for all. I would love to hear about what Mamata di has to say about triple talaq," she told reporters here.

Last week, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad dared Banerjee to come clear on the issue of triple talaq.

"It is said that after Uttar Pradesh the maximum number of women affected by triple talaq is in West Bengal. What have you (Mamata) got to say about these victims of triple talaq," Prasad had said.

Banerjee has sided with Muslim organisations opposing the ban on triple talaq.

Irani, however, criticised Uttar Pradesh's Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan for his comments related to Shariyat -- the personal law of Muslims.

"I think somebody who is more interested that the police look for buffaloes than anti-social elements is in the least position to talk about safety, security and women rights," the Textiles Minister said.

"I also feel that today, you have the government in Uttar Pradesh which is taking a constitutional stand which is legally vetted; which I am sure, will ensure justice," she said.
