SC to monitor filling of police vacancies in six statesNew Delhi, April 17 (IANS) The Supreme Court on Monday said it will monitor the filling of vacancies in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Police Departments.

A bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said the Chief Secretaries of these six states would assist the top court in filing these vacancies.

"At the moment we will monitor the filling up of vacancies in (these) six states. We therefore hereby direct the Home Secretaries of these states to assist the court personally or nominate an officer of Joint Secretary" for the purpose.

 

According to the court, the state administrations will prepare a definite roadmap for filling the vacancies. The bench observed that it was asking the states since 2013 till fill the vacancies but things were not moving.

Pointing out that there were vacancies in the Police Departments in all states, the court said that for the time being it would focus on Uttar Pradesh (150,679 vacancies), Bihar (34,532), Jharkhand (26,307), West Bengal (37,325), Karnataka (24,388) and Tamil Nadu (19,804).
