Bar Council wants Law Commission chief ousted over ‘anti-lawyers bill’

New Delhi, April 15 (IANS) The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Saturday demanded the immediate resignation of Law Commission of India Chairman B.S. Chauhan over a proposed bill that bars advocates from going on strike and announced a half-day strike for April 21.

In a statement, the BCI said the Commission would begin a signature campaign demanding the Law Commission's recommendations be rejected. The signature campaign would also be run for the removal of Law Commission's Chairman.

The Bar Council appealed to the lawyers of the country to burn the copies of recommendations and bill of the Law Commission on April 21.

"The lawyers will abstain from court work after lunch on April 21," BCI Secretary Srimanto Sen said in a statement.

He added that if the recommendations were not rejected, then on May 2, they would hold a protest march from Patiala House Court to Rajghat.

If their demands against the "anti-lawyers recommendations" are not accepted even by May 2, then massive rallies and "Jail Bharo" campaign will be undertaken by the council.

The BCI has said that the proposed amendments by the Law Commission in the Advocates Act were "draconian, anti-lawyer, unconstitutional, undemocratic and anti-people".
