New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) Swaraj India on Thursday denounced what it said was "illegal" rejection of nomination of its 24 candidates for the April 23 Delhi municipal corporation elections on "frivolous grounds".
"The 24 candidates, led by party President Yogendra Yadav, submitted a representation to the Delhi State Election Commission, which has directed the returning officers to review the rejections," said Swaraj India spokesperson Anupam.
He said nominations, mostly of women candidates, were rejected on frivolous grounds, contrary to law.
"Some Returning officers acted exactly opposite to the Election Commission guidelines that mandate them to help candidates fill proper nominations and not reject nominations as far as possible," he said, wondering "if there is a political conspiracy to keep Swaraj India out of the fray".
He said the State Election Commissioner had assured the party leaders that the ROs will be advised to review their orders.
"Swaraj India expresses faith in constitutional bodies like the State Election Commission and hopes that justice will be done," said Anupam.
