LPG cylinders’ dispatch from Indian Oil’s Bengal bottling plant hit

Kolkata, April 6 (IANS) The dispatch of around 30,000 LPG cylinders from the Indian Oil's bottling plant at the city's outskirts was affected on Thursday after a clash between the truck drivers and a group of locals, the company said.

According to police, a clash broke out between the truck drivers and a group of locals on Thursday morning over the demand of subscription for some local programme.

"The Budge Budge bottling plant dispatches 30,000 LPG cylinders a day. Dispatch was affected today (Thursday). But one day disruption will not affect overall supplies," company's DGM (LPG) Amalesh Dutta told IANS.

In order to maintain the seamless supplies, the oil marketing company has a contingency plan in place.

"If the agitation prolongs, it may affect the overall supplies. We have contingency plan. If required, we will arrange cylinders from our other bottling plants in Haldia, Kalyani and Durgapur," he said.

Police, however, said that a group of locals allegedly stopped some truck drivers near the plant to asked for a donation for some local event but an altercation started between the two groups when the drivers denied them.

Police apprehended one of the locals from the spot and detained him.

"The truck drivers present in the bottling plant agitated by blocking the adjacent road for almost two hours after the incident. However, the blockade has been removed and the situation is peaceful now," said a senior officer from Budge Budge police station.
