Moroccan girl in Italy removed from family after whippings

Milan (Italy), April 5 (IANS/AKI) A court in the northern Italian city on Wednesday temporarily removed a 14-year-old Moroccan girl from her family, who allegedly whipped, beaten with a broom handle and kicked for being "too Western".

The Milan children's court ordered the teen, from the city of Pavia, to be taken into care after she went to local emergency room with multiple cuts and bruises which doctors said would take a month to heal and filed a police complaint against her family.

The girl's mother, father and brother are under investigation for mistreatment.

They claim they disciplined the girl due to her "unacceptable" behaviour that included wanting to wear western clothes, staying out late, skipping school and poor grades.

Earlier this week, a 16-year-old Bangladeshi girl and her sisters were taken into care after their mother shaved off the girl's hair in the northern Italian city of Bologna because she failed to wear the Muslim headscarf.
