Kabul, April 5 (IANS) Kabul municipality has hired 170 women to clean the streets in the densely populated city, the media reported on Wednesday.

This is the first time that the municipality has hired women to clean streets in the conservative society, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to municipality officials, 2,000 street cleaners will be employed in 2017 and 500 of them (25 per cent) will be women to keep the city clean.

Kabul, a city with some five million population, produces hundreds of tons of garbage daily, according to officials. The population of the city is increasing constantly as many families in the rural areas leave their homes for Kabul due to security concerns.
