New Delhi, April 3 (IANS) A donor heart was successfully transported from Delhi's R&R Hospital to BLK Super Speciality Hospital in a record eight minutes owing to a green corridor -- a special travel route without red lights to ensure transportation in minimal time.
The donor was a 26-year-old soldier who met with an accident in his village in Uttar Pradesh. Due to several complications, he was transferred to R&R Army Hospital earlier this month, where he was declared brain dead.
Keeping in mind the courage their son had shown over the years, the family agreed to donate his organs.
The heart was successfully transplanted onto a 28-year-old Harmender from Haryana who had to quit his dreams to become an Indian Administrative Service officer because of a severe heart ailment described as heart failure stage D.
Harmender was admitted to BLK Super Speciality Hospital on March 5 with complaints of difficulty in performing daily routine activities.
"Post all investigations, it was diagnosed that he had severe left ventricular dysfunction. Both valves aortic and mitral were incompetent and leaking. His heart was highly dilated with very poor pumping action and the only treatment for such patient is a heart transplant," said Ajay Kaul, Chairman and HOD, Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS)) at BLK Super Speciality Hospital, in a statement on Monday.
