Process on to buy five truck scanners: Centre

New Delhi, March 22 (IANS) The government on Wednesday informed the Rajya Sabha that it is in the process of procuring five full-body truck scanners for deployment at border check posts, including Attari in Punjab, along the India-Pakistan border.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said these scanners will be used also at Uri-Salamabad and Poonch - Chakan-da-bagh check posts along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, Raxaul on the India-Nepal border, and Petrapole on the India-Bangladesh border.

"The government has issued a global tender enquiry for procuring these scanners. It is also obtaining clearances from the respective state governments and other nodal agencies," the Minister said.

He said more details cannot be revealed in view of national security and commercial issues involved.

Informed sources said the procurement process began in 2009, and that the Defence Ministry was initially made the nodal agency. In 2014, the Home Ministry was made the nodal agency.

Jammu and Kashmir Police on March 1 seized a truck returning from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and seized ammunition from it at the Uri check post.
