Haryana protesters land at Parliament door

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) A sudden protest march outside Parliament by a few hundred INLD workers from Haryana sent the security personnel into a tizzy on Wednesday, with police quickly erecting barricades and resorting to lathi-charge.

The protesters, who included women, were demanding the construction of Satluj-Yamuna (SYL) canal.

As the gathering approached near Parliament from Sansad Marg around 1.45 p.m., police personnel rushed and erected the barricades on the road in front of Parliament Annexe.

As the Indian National Lok Dal protesters tried to push across the barricades, the police used lathis to disperse them.

A few women protesters, who had managed to come past the barricades and neared the Parliament House gate, were manhandled by male policemen.

A few people were rounded up by the police.

A water canon was brought in but not used. Personnel of the paramilitry forces were asked to push the protesters back.

Parliament House's gates were shut and nobody allowed entry till the protesters dispersed.

Delhi Police quickly threw a security ring around Parliament House and restricted traffic and pedestrian movement in the vicinity.

The Parliament was at a lunch break time when the incident happened.
