Chandigarh, March 10 (IANS) The maximum temperatures dipped in many places in Punjab and Haryana on Friday following rainfall over the region in the past 24 hours.

The Meteorological Department officials said that the maximum temperatures were up to five degrees below normal at some places.

In the past one week, maximum temperatures were touching 27-30 degrees Celsius at various places.

 

Chandigarh, which experienced thunderstorms since Thursday morning, recorded a maximum temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, five notches below what is normal for this time of the season. The minimum temperature here was recorded at 12.5 degrees.

The city, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, was lashed by thunderstorms early on Friday with strong winds blowing for the most part of the day.

The city recorded 2.9 mm rain in the past 24 hours.

Ambala and Hisar cities in Haryana also experienced some rain.

Amritsar city in Punjab recorded a high of 21.5 degrees Celsius, five degrees below normal.

Industrial city of Ludhiana had over 18 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures here were 22.9 and 10.6 degrees.

The Met Office said that the thunderstorms could occur at a few places in the next 24 to 48 hours.

The officials said that the thunderstorms, with wind speed exceeding 45 km an hour, along with hail could occur at some places over the weekend.

The change in weather raised tension among farmers in both the agrarian states as the standing wheat crop is to be harvested from April first week.
