PM attends Somnath Temple Trust's meeting

Gandhinagar, March 8 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday attended the 116th meeting of the Somnath Temple trust at Somnath in Gujarat, official sources said.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister suggested that the temple precincts be upgraded to provide drinking water and other civic amenities apart from ensuring greenry.

Somnath Temple, one of the leading temples of India, is situated at Prabhas Patan near Veraval in the Gir Somnath district of Gujarat.

Modi also suggested to the trust to make efforts to make Veraval and Prabhas Patan towns cashless and organise special 'mahotsavas' (festivals) across major cities in the country.

The temple trustees decided to let former Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel be its chairman for the current year.

It is the first time since 1978 when a serving Prime Minister has attended the trust meeting. The then Prime Minister Morarji Desai was a member of the Somnath Trust.

Wednesday's meeting was attended by veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader Lal Krishna Advani, BJP President Amit Shah, Keshubhai Patel, P.K. Laheri, J.D. Parmar and Harsh Neotia.
