Kolkata, March 8 (IANS) Reinforcing the message of "Be Bold For Change", a group of college students here marked International Women's Day by participating in a silent rally while women working in farming and handicrafts sector were recognised for their contributions on Wednesday.
The JD Birla Institute's Human Development Department organised a silent rally from Calcutta Rowing Club to their campus to generate awareness among children that they can achieve anything, they want if they are bold enough.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wished women via social media.
"Warm wishes to all the mothers and sisters of this world. Happy #InternationalWomensDay," she said.
The ruling Trinamool Congress took out rallies in every block. In Kolkata, the rally was led by Trinamool Mahila Congress chief Chandrima Bhattacharya.
Dolan Bera, Shankari Jana and Illa Rani Das who work in farming, weaving, handcrafting projects received financial aid for better prospects at an event here to mark the day.
Legendary singer Girija Devi and actress Vidya Balan were also honoured on the day.
The Howrah stations posted a picture of an all women ticket counter highlighting the role they play in the day to day activities of one of the busiest train stations.
The South Bengal Frontier of the Border Security Force felicitated its women staff at a programme in collaboration with Mukti Group.
