Train accident averted after goods train overshoots signal

Kolkata, March 6 (IANS) A major train accident was averted on Monday when a goods train overshot the red signal while another passenger train was about to pass through the same track in the Kharagpur zone of South-Eastern Railways, a senior railway official said.

"A goods train passing though the mainline near Sardiha railway station overshot the red signal at around 9.30 a.m. on Monday while Lokmanya Tilak-Shalimar Express was advancing the loop line to crossover. Thanks to the interlocking signal system, the signal went red for both trains prompting the express train to stop as well," said South-Eastern Railways Chief Public Relations Officer Sanjay Ghosh.

"The driver of the goods train overshot the red signal by mistake. According to the interlocking system, the loop-line signal also went red as there were movements on both sides of the railway track," he said.

Terming it as an isolated incident, Ghosh said railways would do a probe and make sure these incidents do not reoccur.

"We will obviously do a probe into the incident to find out why the goods train driver overshot the signal. This is an isolated incident," he added.
