New Delhi, March 1 (IANS) Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal on Wednesday directed the Delhi Police to take "exemplary deterrent action" in cases of offences against women.
Baijal's directions came as he chaired a meeting of the task force on women safety, a day after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met him demanding action against those who issued rape threats to Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur.
He also directed police to ensure effective visibility on roads and sensitive areas, and to ensure proper lighting in public places.
Gurmehar Kaur had received death and rape threats after she launched a social media campaign against Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who she held responsible for February 22 violence at Ramjas College. She later withdrew from the campaign.
According to an official statement, Baijal also directed the authorities to constitute a 'Study Group' comprising eminent sociologists/psychologist/experts and officers to analyse root causes of crimes against women in the city and recommend corrective action.
The Study Group will have to submit its report within three months of its formation.
In the meeting, the Lt Governor asked Delhi Police to ensure greater visibility of policemen on roads/sensitive places and patrolling to be increased in areas with repeated complaints.
He also directed all agencies concerned to ensure that CCTV cameras installed by them must be functional at all times, the statement said.
