Hospitals should not become centre of exploitation: Bengal Governor

Kolkata, Feb 26 (IANS) In wake of the latest allegations of "unethical money making" and "negligence" against private hospitals in the state, West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on Sunday said they should not be turned into a centre of exploitation of common people.

"An institution like a hospital that is supposed to serve the common people should not become a centre of exploitation," he said.

The Governor also suggested that the medical expenses should be kept within a standard bracket across all the hospitals.

"The important aspects of expense in a hospital, like the cost of medicine or the fees for doctor's treatment, should be kept within a fixed limit," he added.

The Governor's statements came a day after the state Health Department summoned the top officials of a city private hospital for allegedly having refused to release a patient over money and even taking possession of his fixed deposit certificates.

The owners of another private nursing home in the district were arrested on the charges of inflating medical expenses extensively.
