New Delhi, Feb 23 (IANS) The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Thursday recommended that the Delhi Police register a case against Safdarjung Hospital after a woman alleged she delivered twins but was handed over only one baby. Hospital authorities, however, denied the charges.
According to a DCW official the woman approached the commission in January and submitted her ultrasound report conducted at a polyclinic centre as evidence of having twins.
Acting on the complaint, the DCW issued notices to the hospital, polyclinic and the Station House Officer (SHO) of Safdarjung Enclave police station.
"Commission has found prima-facie evidence to substantiate the allegations and has ordered registration of FIR," a DCW statement said.
"While hospital denied the allegations, the polyclinic confirmed both to the Commission as well as to the police that as per ultrasound, the woman was carrying twins. Investigation by local police remains inconclusive," it added.
Husband of the victim Vikas told IANS that his wife was admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital on December 21, 2016 and the delivery took place around midnight.
"We were given only one baby after the delivery while the ultrasound showed twins. My wife too felt that she gave birth to two babies," Vikas, a resident of R.K. Puram, said.
"My wife also saw the hospital staff taking away something wrapped in a piece of cloth. When asked, the staff said it was medical waste," he added.
The couple had approached the police just after the incident but no FIR was registered.
Responding to the DCW's notice, the Safdarjung Hospital stated that a departmental inquiry was conducted which concluded that the woman had delivered one baby.
