Dropout rate in Delhi government schools rises: Congress

New Delhi, Feb 17 (IANS) The Congress on Friday attacked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, saying dropout cases of students from its schools have shot up in the last two years.

"The AAP government in last two years claimed that it has brought revolutionary changes in the government schools, and it has been a talking point for them," Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken told reporters while releasing a chargesheet against the city government titled 'Vishwasghaat ke do saal' (Two years of breach of trust).

"What they have done in last two years is only publicity and no work," the Congress leader claimed.

Targeting the AAP government, Maken said: "The number of dropout cases from the government schools have shot up now, with 16.77 lakh students enrolled with the government school in 2015-16 as compared to 17.75 lakh students in 2013-14."

"When Congress was in power, there was growth in the students' admission in the government schools, but now it going down," he said.

Hitting out at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Maken asked" "Both of them claim they have done a superb job in education sector, then why the number of dropout in government is increasing?"

He also said the results of the class 10 and class 12 exams were poor in the last two years.

Targetting AAP government over health services in Delhi, the Congress leader said that it claim that number of beds have increased in the government hospitals in Delhi "but the fact is that they didn't reveal the actual number of beds increased under the Congress government between 2008 to 2013".

"The number of beds in government hospitals under Sheila Dikshitji's government went up from 6,813 to 9,536 between 2008 to 2013."

"While the number of the beds in the hospitals went up to 10,329 in last three years after the Congress government, which means only 268 beds were added every year under AAP government," he said.

He said the Congress added 544 beds every year

He also said the most hyped Mohalla Clinic of the Delhi government only caters to 26 lakh population of Delhi out of th 3.84 crore patients tackled by the Dellhi government hospitals, which is just 0.8 per cent of the total patients.

Maken also slammed the Delhi government for its poor preparations during the monsoon season when the dengue and chikungunya cases were on rise and said, "When Congress was in power, total cases of dengue recorded was 9,793 between 2011 to 2014, while under AAP government 18,000 cases were registered between 2015 to 2016."

"Total deaths due to dengue under Congress rule stood at 21 between 2011 to 2014, while it went up to 64 between 2015 to 2016," Maken said.

He also said that Kejriwal has failed on all the 70 promises he made to the people of Delhi. "The ridership of passengers in the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses have fallen to 34 lakh in the last two years, which is 25 per cent lower than that of the passenger it carried under Congress government in 2012-13."
