Kolkata, Feb 14 (IANS) A youth fatally shot his sister over a property dispute in West Bengal's Hoogly district on Tuesday, police said.
While the neighbours claimed it was an honour killing, police denied such angle to the crime.
Nitu Singh (26) of Prabhat Nagar in Rishra town was shot in the head by her brother Amit Singh in the morning, Nandadulal Ghosh, in charge of Serampore police station, said.
"The woman's parents lodged an FIR against their younger son Amit. It is possible he killed his sister during an argument and fled the spot. The parents said there were frequent quarrels between the two in the last few days," he said.
Police were unable to trace the absconding accused till the evening.
The family's neighbours earlier said the crims was an 'honour killing' since the family disapproved of her relations with a local resident. Rubbishing the claims, the police officer said it was not the case.
"It is not honour killing. The family was aware of the woman's relations with the local resident for a long time but nothing had happened all this while," he said.
The woman's father claimed some outsiders killed her but refused to comment on his son's sudden disappearance.
"Someone shot her from outside. My son is not at home since morning. We are not sure where he has gone," he said.
