7 killed as passenger bus overturns in Karachi

Islamabad, Feb 14 (IANS) At least seven people were killed and 20 others injured when a passenger bus overturned in Pakistan's port city of Karachi on Tuesday.

ARY News said the passenger bus was on its way to Badin district when the accident happened near Sassy toll plaza of Karachi, the capital city of the country's Sindh province.

Police said the speeding bus overturned after hitting a roadside electric tower when the driver lost control over the vehicle due to brake failure.

The injured people were shifted to a nearby hospital where several of them were said to be in critical condition.

Road accidents frequently happen in Pakistan due to poorly maintained roads, violation of road safety rules and reckless driving.

According to data compiled by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, over 9,000 road accidents are reported to the police every year, killing an average of around 5,000 people annually in the country.

Traffic police officials say that 90 per cent of road accidents in Pakistan are caused by human error.
